Set Up Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) in Apple Passwords

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for setting up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in Preno using Apple Passwords.

  1. Open the Apple Passwords App on your mobile device.

  2. Tap on Codes.

  3. Tap on the + (plus) icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

  4. Tap on Scan QR Code with Camera.

    The scanning function in Apple Passwords will open on your mobile device.

  5. In Preno, hover over your name in the top-right corner of the screen and select Profile.

  6. Click on Add Authenticator.

  7. Enter your Preno password and click on Verify.

  8. A QR code will display on screen. Scan the QR code with your Apple Passwords App.

  9. After scanning the QR Code, you will see Add Verification Code at the top of the screen. Tap on the + button.

  10. Enter a name for the passcode – for example “Preno”.

  11. Tap on the check mark icon to continue.

  12. A pop-up will appear on screen. Tap on Save Anyway.

  13. Your apple device will create the passkey account and will provide a 6 digit authentication code on screen. This code refreshes every 30 seconds.

  14. Enter the code into the Verification Code field displayed in Preno. Press the Enable button to confirm.

  15. Backup codes will display on screen. Copy or Download the codes and save them somewhere safe and easily accessible if needed in future.

  16. Click on the Done button to continue.

  17. In Preno, you will see that an Authenticator App has been added:

Unable to Scan a QR Code

If you are using the same device to access Preno and set up Apple Passwords as your Authenticator, you will not be able to scan the QR code. Follow these steps to set up MFA using the setup key instead

  1. Go to Preno, hover over your name in the top-right corner of the screen and select Profile.

  2. Click on Add Authenticator.

  3. Enter your Preno password and click on Verify.

  4. Look for the link beneath the QR Code that says: Can't scan the QR code? Show Setup Key.

    Tap that link. A setup key showing long string of letters and numbers will be displayed. Press the Copy icon to copy this text.

  5. Open the Apple Passwords App on your mobile device.

  6. Tap on Codes.

  7. Tap on the + (plus) icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

  8. Tap on Set-Up Key.

  9. Press and hold in this field then select Paste to paste in the code copied earlier.

  10. Click on Use Set-Up Key button.

    An authenticator account for Preno will be created in Apple Passwords.
