Set Up Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) in Microsoft Authenticator

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for setting up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in Preno using Microsoft Authenticator.

  1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator App on your mobile device.

  2. Tap on the QR Code button to open the QR scanner.

  3. Go to Preno, hover over your name in the top-right corner of the screen and select Profile.

  4. Click on Add Authenticator.

  5. Enter your Preno password and click on Verify.

  6. Scan the QR code with your Microsoft Authenticator App.

  7. Microsoft Authenticator will create an account for Preno and a 6 digit code will be displayed. This code refreshes every 30 seconds.

  8. Enter this code into the Verification Code field displayed in Preno. Press the Enable button to confirm.

  9. Backup codes will display on screen. Copy or Download the codes and save them somewhere safe and easily accessible if needed in future.

  10. Click on the Done button to continue.

  11. In Preno, you will see that an Authenticator App has been added:


Unable to Scan a QR Code

If you are using the same device to access Preno and set up Microsoft Authenticator, you will not be able to scan the QR code. Follow these steps to set up MFA using the setup key instead

  1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator App on your mobile device.

  2. Tap the + (plus) button in the top right corner of the screen.

  3. Select Other (Google, Facebook, etc).

  4. The Scan QR Code screen will display in the Authenticator App. Tap on Enter code manually.

    Leave this screen open in the background.

  5. Go to Preno, hover over your name in the top-right corner of the screen and select Profile.

  6. Click on Add Authenticator.

  7. Enter your Preno password and click on Verify.

  8. A QR Code will appear on screen.

  9. Look for the link beneath the QR Code that says:

    Can't scan the QR code? Show Setup Key

    Tap that link. A long string of letters and numbers will be displayed. This is the secret/setup key.

  10. Press the Copy icon to copy this text

  11. Go back to the Microsoft Authenticator App. In the screen that you left open earlier, enter:

    a. Account name: something like Preno (this helps to identify the authenticator account)

    b. Secret Key: Tap and hold your finger down in this space and select Paste to paste the setup key copied in step 15 above.

    Tap Finish.

  12. Microsoft Authenticator will create an account for Preno and a 6 digit code will be displayed. This code refreshes every 30 seconds.

  13. Enter this code into the Verification Code field displayed in Preno. Press the Enable button to confirm.
